How To Attract and Recruit The Right Talent For Your SME
In 2013, American research-based, global performance-management consulting company Gallup conducted a 142-country survey which showed that only 13% of employees worldwide are engaged in their work.
63% of employees worldwide reported that they were "not engaged" in their work and a further 24% reported being "actively disengaged". Those who are “not engaged" lack motivation and are less likely to invest efforts into company goals. Those who are “actively disengaged” are unhappy and unproductive at work and likely to spread negativity to coworkers, which can then impact other employees´ happiness and productivity.
Equally alarming as the statistics above, in another Gallup survey, 71% of millennials said they were not engaged or actively disengaged at work. In fact, 60% of millennials said they were currently open to a new job opportunity.
With this in mind, when it comes to recruitment and workplace engagement, since millennials will represent 40% of the total workforce by 2020, we discuss how to attract and recruit the right talent for your small or medium business:
What Millennials Want
Gone are the days where, as a company, you could simply post a job ad stating the company perks and compensation to attract talent.
Millennials need more. They seek meaning and purpose, and simply posting company perks is not enough to attract their interest.
Where most company branding is focused on its customers, your company´s branding should convey the care and employee support that exists within your organisation. Give job seekers a taste of what it would be like to work for your company.
Rather than listing job tasks, you should aim to connect with the emotions of the job seeker. Describing how teams work, the impacts teams make, and their motivations are far more appealing than just company perks.
Attracting and recruiting candidates who identify with the company´s mission is a better all-round fit, not just for the candidate to feel connected to the brand but also for employee engagement and retention.
Your Company´s Purpose Is Key To Recruiting Talent
Research shows that millennials are less motivated by money and instead place greater importance on social causes and a sense of purpose. In fact, in the 2016 Deloitte Millennial Survey (post link), six out of ten millennials said that “a sense of purpose” was part of the reason they chose their current employer.
A Gallup article from May 2016 (post link) said that 21% of millennials had changed jobs within the past year and only 50% planned to be with their current company in one year from now.
However, studies have shown that when millennials knew what a company stood for and what made the company different from its competitors, 71% of said they planned to stay with that company for at least another year.
Lastly, as suggested in an article which appeared in Forbes in December 2015 (post link), millennials don't want jobs; they want lives. Millennials want to know how the company relates to the wider world, what good the company contributes, and if the company’s social responsibility matches their own.

What is your company´s mission and is it clear to those who visit your website or social media channels?
Before applying for a job, millennials research companies thoroughly. They read online reviews, and speak with friends for validity. So, as a company, can you ask your vendors, customers, and suppliers to write testimonials and online reviews about your company?
